Community Minded

We contribute responsibly to tourism and the social, cultural, and economic vitality of the Bellarine Peninsula and greater Geelong region, extending to Melbourne and the Western Districts.

The Hive is dedicated to:

Supporting Art in school

Supporting emerging artists in the region is close to our hearts! We value the opportunity to encourage grassroots participation in the arts.

In 2019 we hosted our first Ocean Grove Primary School Art show, a major annual fundraising event for the school and a thrilling experience for the kids who get to see their art on the wall of a real gallery. With over 600 children, this is a significant undertaking but we love working with the school’s dedicated art teachers and helpful volunteers.

Encouraging an immersive experience for these budding young artists, we hope to instil an appreciation of galleries as fun, engaging places to visit for both them and their families. And perhaps one day, some of these young creatives will once again have their art displayed as professional artists on gallery walls.

In addition, annually since 2022, we work with the Art teachers to create a series of workshops between our artists and the school Art Group.

Promoting Local Businesses and Groups

A glass of local sparkling wine to celebrate an Exhibition Opening is always special.  It is also an excellent opportunity for the gallery to showcase the great wines our region has to offer. With our focus firmly on the Bellarine, we have valued the opportunity to promote several local wineries. With great appreciation our current partner winery is Leura Park Estate.

The Gallery has also welcomed the opportunity to support the work of local tour operators. We have partnered with both Botanica Tours and O’Shannasy Tours to include the Hive on their list of places to visit with their Art & Garden focussed tours of Western Victoria. These tours provide a wonderful experience for those of you wishing to explore our beautiful region.

We also love engaging with seniors in the community. We have facilitated studio access for the local Probus Clubs to see Will Wilson undertaking his unique sculpture work, engage in artist talks and visit exhibitions.

Assisting with local government initiatives

We are proud to have been involved in the inaugural BHAC Bellarine Art Trail in 2016, and a much visited participant ever since in this fabulous, successful growing event that showcases artists work and studios. We play host to close to 10 local feature artist each time that are present and often creating in our gallery space providing a wonderful opportunity for the public to interact with many artists.

The Hive has also joined in the Open studios event for Geelong Design Week on multiple occassions. A highlight was the 2022 dual Group Exhibitions “Elements” featuring both sculpture and ceramics exploring what it meant to ‘belong’ to our surrounds.

As Will Wilson is a key part of The Hive, and the gallery is both a member of Geelong Tourism and located along ‘The Great Southern Touring Route’, it was incredible to have Roger Grant, then CEO of Geelong Tourism join us on the Willie Wildlife sculpture stand at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2019.

Awarded 5 stars and with the added honour of meeting HRH The Queen, it was a very memorable experience to help promote the worthy travel adventure of this route.
