Phillip Butters returns three years since his last exhibition, ‘Luminosity’.
“Art and painting has always been a part of my life, I have enjoyed painting from early days as a very young person and during various interludes I have enjoyed painting, sketching and life drawing.
But life and life’s pressures has often meant this pleasurable interest has taken a back seat.
However, in retirement I have found time to re-embrace this passion.
Joining “Porta Vermelha Studio” at 245 Gundry’s Rd Bellbrae has been a great experience and by allotting a regular day a week to painting I have had time to concentrate on the development and pursuit of a personalised style.
Interaction with other Artists within the Studio has been a great support and the “Cross Pollination” of ideas encourages one to try different concepts and techniques.
Painting is a journey, not a destination, this is not just a hackneyed expression, it is a truism in Art.
My journey has progressed initially I found style in painting a series of monochromatic misty, Seascapes, Landscapes and Cityscapes, working with the ethereal quiet of foggy days and the exploring a “less is more” technique to encourage the person viewing the painting to bring their own thoughts and perceptions to the experience.
I mainly still work in semi abstraction, I have moved from Monochromatic work to dramatic Primary Colour Abstraction I have had wonderful adventures into colour I am developing a strong style, every painting is a new adventure, yet I often retreat to familiar style to re-centre.
Notwithstanding my journey into colour I always encourage my viewers to see my paintings through their own eyes and from their own perspective. If my paintings tell you a story I consider that to be my greatest compliment.”
