Rod Thom “the Burl Bloke” is a local craftsman from Point Lonsdale who has been passionately sourcing and working with burls for over 10 years.
The time consuming process involves washing, air drying cutting into shape, re-shaping and sanding from 60 grit up to 400 grit sandpaper. The burls are then oiled 5-6 times with Danish Oil.
Burls are found on tree roots, branches, and trunks, developing from abnormal bud growth cells forming lumpy growths covered in coarse bark. Each burls is unique in its size, grain and colour. The hardness and shape of natural edge burls makes them extremely hard to work with but the result are certainly worth it.
There are always more of these arriving so pop in or enquire if you wish to see other designs.
